“Wish I could say only nice things but this queen is royally sad”
I have wanted to stay aboard the RMS Queen Mary for decades and finally had the chance to do so last week. I found what seemed and incredibly competitive rate (about $175 total) for a standard King room. I think the front desk upgraded us to the next level based on photos on their website so that was a nice perk. But we just couldn’t muster the will to stay for a second night. Despite the valiant and impassioned efforts of the outstanding staff, this ship is OLD. Way past its prime and no longer fit for service. It is literally crumbling everywhere and is so unsightly and disturbing. The high quality linens and toiletries don’t hide the fact that the shower drain was completely chipped down to the rusting metal. We did not use it. The wondrous nostalgia inspired by this formerly glorious , luxurious grande dame isn’t enough to offset the disappointment and sadness that it’s no longer in habitable condition. The excellence and generosity of the staff can’t compensate for the fact that this hotel needs tens of millions of dollars to restore it properly. Many areas are blocked off because of damage. Carpets are threadbare. Nearly every surface and detail is cracked, chipped, oxidized, missing pieces, or disintegrating. Now that you know what to expect in the worst aspects, it seems incredibly clean and the bed was comfortable. The staff cares so much about this place and they deserve all the accolades of trying to bravely represent the power and elegance that this hotel wishes it still was. There are countless cool details in the room that are artifacts from the original era. Most are for show and are inoperable. It’s like a night at the museum. But museums are modern structures that keep up with the times and contain the exhibits. This is the opposite. I felt safe but I couldn’t relax in full sense of security because it’s such an old space. The porthole windows are neat but they are very loud when not fully closed - we were woken in the wee hours of the night when another guest kept dropping the heavy metal and it clanged and shook the whole side of the ship. The occupants of the room next to us either abuse their children or are into link games because we clearly heard spanking/slapping. Despite the metal and extensive wood paneling the noise carries around the ship. I can’t imagine how loud the ship must’ve throbbed and buzzed when full of passengers and the engines roaring out at sea back in its peak - 80 years ago!
